One of the most loved desserts in the world, tiramisu became popular in Treviso in the 1960s. It’s name derives from the Treviso dialect phrase “tirame sù”, which means “I need a boost, recharge my body”.
‘Tiramisù’ is one of the five internationally best known Italian words. But according to one of the many legends, this dessert already existed between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the creation of a brothel madam in the historic downtown area.
The ‘Siora’ of the establishment is said to have created this exquisite and invigorating treat to console her customers who were not particularly gratified by their marital circumstances and she was wont to exclaim “desso ve tiro sù mi” (which in Venetian dialect means ‘I’ll cheer you up now’).
Considered the modern dessert par excellence, today tiramisu is prepared with ladyfingers, mocha coffee, mascarpone cream and cocoa.
Tiramisù Day is celebrated every year in October in the historic centre of Treviso, where a homemade tiramisu competition is held, along with many other events and celebrations.
