Cittadella, incorporated in the province of Padua, is Europe’s only walled city in to have a surviving medieval parapet walkway; it is elliptical in shape and entirely walkable.
This 15-metre-high walk is a truly intriguing experience, so much so that you feel as if you are “walking through history”.
You can stroll through the streets within the walls, admiring the Duomo church, the parish church of San Donato, the Palazzo Pretorio and the four different city gates.
If you get the chance, don’t forget to visit during the evening hours, when the town and its bars and restaurants become lively and carefree.
In summer, take a short break just outside Porta Vicenza to enjoy a relaxing drink at the RIVA bar, romantically situated in the open air along the canal bank.
