Located on the top of the Cartizze hill in Valdobbiadene, the ‘Osteria senza Oste’ is an old farm building dating back to the late 19th century, where the owner, a charcuterie producer, used to welcome friends and customers to offer his produce.
It often happened that when his friends passed by and did not find him, they left him notes where they wrote that his absence had left them hungry.
One day, he decided to leave three bottles on the kitchen table, which he always left open.
Bottles of Cartizze wine and Prosecco with 6 glasses and a sign that read “price 10 euros, help yourselves and enjoy”; this avoided embarrassing his friends and passers-by from who would otherwise have found themselves eating and drinking without paying.
When the owner began to find grateful thank you notes, not only in Italian but also in other languages, he consulted the tourist office and agreed with them that he could start offering other cold cuts and sweets that were typical of the Treviso area.
Today, the Osteria senza Oste is one of the most popular places for local people to enjoy wines such as Prosecco and Cartizze, homemade salami, cheeses, local sweets, boiled eggs, bread baked in a wood-fired oven and coffee.
You can eat at a table area inside the old farm building, in the little outdoor courtyard or take a glass of wine with you to enjoy on a stroll among the never-ending vineyards with a beautiful view overlooking the Prosecco hills.
